Navy finds lost sub

Posted by David Hardy · 3 October 2008 11:56 AM

Story here. It's the Grunion, last heard from in 1942, and found off the Aleutians.

Ah, a much fuller account.

I have a foggy memory that one of her officers (who wasn't on her last tour) wrote a book about the ship.

Comments

Two observations: First, the Navy did not find the sub, a private expedition financed by the family of the commanding officer found it. The Navy just confirmed the find. Second, the discovery occurred over a year ago (see more details at http://poppypundit.wordpress.com/2007/10/11/the-final-voyage-of-the-uss-grunion/). I'm not sure why it's just now making the news again.

Boat. Submarines are Boats.

It's making the news because the Navy just officially confirmed what the private expedition found was the Grunion. Sad story, especially since what apparently sunk them was their own torpedo.
